Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Patterns
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a rehabilitation approach that uses specific movement patterns and techniques to improve neuromuscular control, flexibility, and strength. PNF patterns mimic functional movements, engaging multiple joints and muscle groups in diagonal and spiral motions.
What Are PNF Patterns?
PNF patterns are based on the idea that the nervous and musculoskeletal systems work best when movements are integrated rather than isolated. Instead of training one joint or muscle at a time, PNF uses multi-plane, functional movement patterns to enhance coordination, motor learning, and efficiency. These patterns are particularly useful in physiotherapy, sports training, and neurological rehabilitation.
Upper Extremity PNF Patterns
- D1 Flexion
- Shoulder flexion, adduction, external rotation.
- Elbow flexion, forearm supination, wrist flexion.
- Functional Example: Bringing a fork to the mouth.
- D1 Extension
- Shoulder extension, abduction, internal rotation.
- Elbow extension, forearm pronation, wrist extension.
- Functional Example: Reaching behind to put on a seatbelt.
- D2 Flexion
- Shoulder flexion, abduction, external rotation.
- Elbow extension, wrist extension.
- Functional Example: Reaching up and out, like drawing a sword.
- D2 Extension
- Shoulder extension, adduction, internal rotation.
- Elbow flexion, wrist flexion.
- Functional Example: Tucking a shirt into the waistband.
Lower Extremity PNF Patterns
- D1 Flexion
- Hip flexion, adduction, external rotation.
- Knee flexion, ankle dorsiflexion, toe extension.
- Functional Example: Crossing one leg over the other.
- D1 Extension
- Hip extension, abduction, internal rotation.
- Knee extension, ankle plantarflexion, toe flexion.
- Functional Example: Pushing the leg back when standing.
- D2 Flexion
- Hip flexion, abduction, internal rotation.
- Knee flexion, ankle dorsiflexion, toe extension.
- Functional Example: Kicking a ball to the side.
- D2 Extension
- Hip extension, adduction, external rotation.
- Knee extension, ankle plantarflexion, toe flexion.
- Functional Example: Standing tall from a lateral step.
